Answers About Chinese Coronavirus - Nebraska Medicine

Well. its not in the USA except dor one case in Seattle and that patient came from Wuhan. If there is an outbreak then washing hands, not going in to crowded places. If you get a sore throat with a fever see your doctor. Wear a mask and if its truly in your area then get a special mask that will filter the virus. Your risk or getting this virus is remote. You worrying about it now is not helpful for you.

Don't go to Wuhan or be around people with the virus. The virus is a corona virus. So it is similar to other cold viruses. Originally, it was reported it was unknown if it was transmissible from human to human. With the numbers of cases being now reported it would appear that it may be, but that is not confirmed.
It is also reported that people caring for the ill in clinics and hospitals are not getting the disease. But again, It may be to early to tell. The death rate from the disease appears to be low compared to other neuvo viruses we have seen.
The only way to avoid getting any virus is to not have contact with, or go to areas where infected people are.
I am going to update my answer after reading the news today. The virus does appear to spread from humans to humans, and 15 health care workers have come down with the disease. The concern is that this causes pneumonia.

About 60,000 people are already infected (including the suspected cases). Related articles from Chinese media: Wuhan Coronavirus 2020 Outbreak: Latest Updates from China
Basically, so far there is no reliable vaccine to prevent or treat 2019-nCoV infection. No wonder, since the virus outbreak, we have crossed 34000 confirmed cases.
Here is the BBC report about the common infection symptoms from the people who died due to coronavirus infection:

How to prevent coronavirus infection?
The best way to prevent the infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Here are some tips to avoid getting exposed and infected with the evil coronavirus:
  1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  4. Stay home when you are sick.
  5. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  7. If your body temperature is beyond 37.2′ C, go for a medical test.
  8. If you are living in an intfected area, DON'T go out! Don't take a chance.
  9. Kids and elderlies are more vulnerable due to weak immune system. Suggest them to stay home.
  10. Improve your immune system. Drink lemonade, more and more. ;)
Doctor's advice about *CORONAVIRUS*:
1. It is pretty large in size (cell is about 400-500nm diameter), so any normal mask (not just the N95 feature) should be able to filter it out. However, when someone who's infected sneezes in front of you, it will take a great 3 meters (about 10 feet) before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
2. When the virus drops on metal surface, it will live for at least 12 hours. So remember if you come in contact with any metal surface, wash your hands with soap thoroughly.
3. The virus can remain active on fabric for 6-12 hours. Normal laundry detergent should kill the virus. For winter clothing that does not require daily washing, you can put it out under the sun to kill the virus.

About the *SYMPTOMS* of the pneumonia caused by *CORONAVIRUS*:
1. It will first infect the throat, so the throat will have the dry sore throat feeling which will last for 3 to 4 days
2. Then the virus will blend into the nasal fluid and drips into the trachea and enter the lungs, causing pneumonia. This process will take 5 to 6 days.
3. With pneumonia, comes high fever and difficulty in breathing. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You will feel like you are drowning in water. It's important to go seek immediate medical attention if you feel like this.

1. The most common way of getting infected is by touching things in public, so you must wash your hands frequently. The virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 mins, but a lot can happen in those 5-10 mins (you can rub your eyes or pick your nose unwittingly).
2. *Aside from washing your hands frequently, you can gargle with Betadine Sore Throat Gargle to eliminate or minimize the germs while they are still in your throat (before dripping down to your lungs)*.

What are the best ways to lose weight?

  • Food habit-
1- First of all I quit rice from my diet. I noticed one thing that I was addicted to rice and would eat lots and lots without even the count.
So I switched to Roti/Chapati/Indian wheat bread. To be honest I still dont know whats the nutrition values of roti vs rice yet there was this psychological impact on me while eating roti. I could count the number of rotis I was eating while rice i was seeing just the grains.
So I kept my maximum threshold limit of eating to 3 rotis.
2- I used to eat lots of junk food /fast food. Fried items like Samosa, pakoda etc were strictly no go from me. Rolls, noodles, momos, chips etc were also restricted.
3- Removed sweets from diet. I had a bad habbit of eating desserts after the dinner. Basically I had to remove any sweet dish from my menu (TдT).
4-More homemade foods were included with roti which were daal, chickpeas, soyabean ,boiled eggs, mixed vegetables, sprouts, chicken curry on weekends (yeah with less oil).
● Workout-
1- I started with brisk walking. Eventually I started jogging as walking for months made my body resistant to it.
2- Learned to jump ropes. Yeah jumping ropes does wonder. It was fun to perform and burned lot of calories.
3- So after I started jogging and jumping ropes, I began to develop stamina yet I was weak. So I started to do pushups. It was one of the difficult task I ever did. Initially I started doing the knee push-up and after 2 straight month of jogging , jumping ropes, sqautes I did my first pushup. It was one of the memorable moment when I went straight down and able to loft my weight (although I still can't do the pull ups but yeah I am working on that too).
3- So after learning basic push-ups and squats I included many variation to it. You can check youtube for them for advance level.
tips for weight loss:

1.After breakfast, stick to water:At breakfast, go ahead and drink orange juice. But throughout the rest  of the day, focus on water instead of juice or soda. The average  American consumes an extra 245 calories a day from soft drinks. That’s  nearly 90,000 calories a year—or 25 pounds! And research shows that  despite the calories, sugary drinks don’t trigger a sense of fullness  the way that food does.
2.Eat three fewer bites of your meal,  one less treat a day, or one less glass of orange juice. Doing any of  these can save you about 100 calories a day, and that alone is enough to  prevent you from gaining the two pounds most people mindlessly pack on  each year.

3.Wait until your stomach rumbles before you reach for food.  It’s stunning how often we eat out of boredom, nervousness, habit, or  frustration—so often, in fact, that many of us have actually forgotten  what physical hunger feels like. If you’re hankering for a specific  food, it’s probably a craving, not hunger. If you’d eat anything you  could get your hands on, chances are you’re truly hungry. Find ways  other than eating to express love, tame stress, and relieve boredom.
4.Sniff a banana, an apple, or a peppermint when you feel hungry.  You might feel silly, but it works. When Alan R. Hirsch, M.D.,  neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research  Foundation in Chicago, tried this with 3,000 volunteers, he found that  the more frequently people sniffed, the less hungry they were and the  more weight they lost—an average of 30 pounds each. One theory is that  sniffing the food tricks the brain into thinking you’re actually eating  it.

How to wight loss?

Losing weight requires effort and discipline. Some people are willing to spend hours on a treadmill and exercise to cut calories. No wonder sometimes the process of making a slim body become a torturous routine.
Actually there are several easy ways to get around the process of losing weight
1. Drink a glass of water before eating
You will remain hydrated while feeling full in no time. Drinking water before eating helps us avoid overeating.
2. Choose foods that are processed slightly
Choosing minimally processed foods such as fresh fruit rather than dried fruit can help us cut a lot of calories.
3. Snack on dark chocolate
Rather than trying cake in between meals, you better eat dark chocolate. It might not taste as delicious as milk chocolate, but it certainly can release you from excessive craving for sweet foods. You will be happy if you know how many calories you can avoid from consuming dark chocolate.
4. Be consistent with portions
If you want to lose weight, it is very important to be consistent with food portions. Calculate the snacks first and don't eat them directly from the pocket. Use a small plate so that it visually causes satiety. Get rid of the rest of the snacks so you are not tempted to snack again.
Even if you don't dedicate all of your free time to exercise, you can still burn calories by moving more. Take a short break in the office by walking around the office, choosing to use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Park your vehicle in a place far from the office entrance is also the easiest way to burn calories.
6. Don't drink calorie drinks
You can get calorie intake from soft drinks, morning juice, and wine in large glasses at dinner. Choose water with pieces of fresh fruit such as cucumbers, lemons, or mint to store important calories.
7. Don't let hungry for too long
Being hungry can bring you good. But letting your body starve all day to enjoy dessert is not a wise and unhealthy step and can sabotage your diet.
Eat at the right time and snack at the right time to avoid falling blood sugar levels.
8. Snack snacks high in protein and fiber
When it's time to try to make sure you don't eat chips or cookies and choose snacks that are rich in protein and fiber with good taste.
9. Eat early dinner with light portions
Try dinner with a menu that only contains 25 percent of your daily calories. Also make sure you eat dinner two or three hours before going to bed. Eating large portions and getting too close to bedtime can interfere with digestion and make it difficult to sleep.
10. Longer sleep
Lack of sleep can cause you to eat more throughout the day and not have enough energy to exercise. So make sure you get 9 hours of sleep every night. That is an effective way to lose weight.

You can eat all the fruit, vegetables (not starchy) that you want, and a reasonable amount of meat and nuts. Just cut out carbohydrates: sugar, starch (this means bread, crackers, chips, etc.), starchy vegetables like potatoes.
You actually already know this, it is NOT dieting per se, it is a change of diet to unprocessed, natural foods. I have a friend who just lost 25 lbs in 3 of weeks and another lost 7 lbs in 2 weeks.
Walking a mile a day gets all your systems working - not really strenuous exercise.

A typical Indian healthy diet plan is as follows that can help you lose weight in a certain amount of time:

Early morning:

Drink a warm glass of water with a teaspoon of honey and a few drops of lemon juice in the morning.

Breakfast needs to be http://protein-rich. It should have mixed veg daliya/oats porridge in skimmed milk/vegetable uttapam/stuffed roti with curd/Idli-sambar/eggs/dal cheela.

Mid-day snacks:

These should include a bowl of fruits, mixed nuts and seeds.

Lunch should include whole wheat chapati, a bowl of pulses/legumes, salad/curd and vegetable raita.

In the evening, it is beneficial to have a protein shake, milk/nuts and seeds/any fruit.

Dinner should always be light. It should include dal/veggies with brown rice or roti/salad.

Following are some tips which should be followed along with the Indian diet plan:

  • Consume freshly prepared home-made meals that consist of seasonal and local ingredients.
  • Breakfast should include parathas, eggs, idli, poha.
  • Consume 4-5 meals frequently.
  • Strictly avoid processed and ready-to-eat foods.
  • Never skip your breakfast. Take your breakfast within half an hour of waking up while dinner at least 2 hours before sleeping.
  • Always avoid overeating.
  • Exercise is always important.
  • An uninterrupted sleep of 7-8 hours is essential.

In addition to a healthy diet plan, any form of exercise that you like doing can help in losing weight. To plan your weight loss diet, Indian home-made food is an outstanding option. You just need to keep in mind that you have to use less ghee or oil. Any type of junk food is harmful for your health, so always keep sticking to your traditional Indian diet plan.

How can I make physical exercise more enjoyable?

Tips to make gym workouts more fun:
  1. Keep on changing the exercises you perform for every body part.
SO, if I am doing an exercise for chest one day I will do dumbbell chest press and on my next workout session I will do barbell bench press. Does not look as if a big difference right now, but when you do this you will realize that you feel differently while doing both of these.
2. Create a playlist of your favorite songs and keep on changing the playlist to not get bored in the gym.
3. Have black coffee 30 min before hitting the gym.
Coffee will activate your central nervous system and you will feel more energetic and active in the gym. More energy and focus will mean more meaningfulness in your workout and then boredom is completely out of the picture.
4. Train with a partner
When you and your buddy will be doing the same exercise alternatively it will create a competitive spirit in you to perform better . You both will also push each other to lift more which will again make gymming fun.
5. Do not rely only on the treadmill for cardio.
Go for a run in a more natural environment, try high intensity bodyweight workouts for cardio and even you can add any jumping activity like skipping and jumping jacks in your rest time between sets. This will not only make your workout more time efficient but also will help you lose fat because of the high intensity you are maintaining in the gym.

How do you avoid diabetes?

Research shows that you want to be on a low carb diet that is rich in omega 3 fatty foods. Foods to avoid include anything made from white flour including pasta, white rice, white bread, and waffles. Other foods to avoid that are high in carbs include baked beans, sugar, muffins, and crackers. Foods that are made from refined flour are converted into sugar as soon as you eat them which will spike blood sugar. If you are at a high risk for diabetes your body's insulin is unable to keep up with the sugar intake and will not allow the glucose to enter the cells. When you eat foods that are rich in omega 3 fats the foods do not convert into sugar as fast as high carb foods do thereby allowing your body to absorb the glucose into the cells more slowly and preventing the pancreas from having to throw out so much insulin. Foods that are rich in omega 3 fats include walnuts, fish, winter squash, olive oil, soybeans, and kidney beans.

Being involved in daily exercise activities will also help you avoid diabetes. Exercise is a great way not only to reduce weight but to maintain normal blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. You don't necessarily need to join the nearest gym, even 30-40 minutes of walking per day will give the desired result.

Note: Diabetes is a condition that affects blood sugar levels and causes many serious health problems if left untreated or uncontrolled. There is no cure for diabetes, but it can go into remission. People can manage it with medication and lifestyle changes.

Majorly, genetics and family history affect a person's chances of developing diabetes, but you can always take steps to lower your risk of diabetes.
  1. Losing weight, adopting more activity into your daily life, quit smoking and reducing alcohol intake can also help towards lowering the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and improving your all-round health.
  2. Also, Effective diets to prevent type 2 diabetes are those that do not cause your body to produce a lot of insulin. Carbohydrate has the biggest demand on insulin and so any diet that helps reduce carbohydrate intake will help towards reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes. Cutting out sugary food and drink and refined grains such as white bread and white rice is a good first step.

How can I prevent ankle pain after running?

Here are a few things you can do for ankle pain:

  1. Rest. If your ankle pain persists, it’ll be better to avoid running for a while. This will allow the affected ankle to heal.
  2. Ice. Apply an ice pack on the painful region 10–15 minutes every hour. This will help numb the area and reduce pain and swelling.
  3. Compression. Try lighting wrapping an elastic bandage around the painful ankle. This will also help decrease pain and swelling in the region.
  4. Elevation. Keep your ankle in an elevated position at the level of the heart. This will help reduce blood flow to the area and decrease the possibility of inflammation and swelling in the ankle.
  5. Insoles. The use of foot orthotics helps in the long-term treatment of ankle problems. This is achieved by promoting a healthy range of motion of the ankle muscles.

While purchasing insoles, make sure you find a pair with strong arches that can sufficiently carry the weight of your body without collapsing.

What are the best medicine for arthritis ankle pain?

First of all, see your doctor and make sure that the pain is indeed just simple arthritis.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflmmatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are pretty much the gold standard treatment for run-of-the-mill arthritis pain of any location. Over the counter NSAIDs commonly used for arthritis are ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Alleve). These NSAIDs are used chronically for arthritis, because arthritis is a condition that does not improve with time. Instead, generally it worsens over time. Especially in weight-bearing joints like the ankle.

The treatment is different if you have rheumatoid arthritis. These medications require prescriptions from your physician.

Having said that, the single most important thing you can do to alleviate ankle pain from arthritis is to lose weight (unless you are already at low-normal weight or underweight). The more you weigh, the more pressure there is on your load-bearing joints like the hips, knees, and ankles. Exercise will be an important component of losing weight. Swimming is an excellent exercise because it takes a lot of energy, and it puts very little weight on your joints because your body floats in the water.

What is the best medicine for allergies?

The best medicine, I would say get a Neti pot, some fine ground salt for the Neti pot and start clearing the nasal passages, look at what I have written above and begin to modify what you eat. Get walking each day and move stagnation in the body and the very best “Medicine?” Food based Vitamin C!

If its been 4 years, please visit a dermatologist and get it diagnosed. Skin problems have a vast spectrum and can range from a simple eczema to psoriasis which takes a long period to neutralize completely. For now, apply Surfaz SN skin cream on it, which works for most of the skin problems. If that doesn't help even after one week, then please let me know.

Skin allergy symptoms like redness, itching, and swelling often go away on their own in a week or two, with or without treatment.

You can do some things to make it more comfortable in the meantime.

Avoid contact. It might sound obvious, but it’s worth a reminder. You can’t use or touch what triggers your allergy.

Chill out. A cool compress or shower can help calm a fiery rash. Gently pat dry and then moisturize.

Soak it. Colloidal oatmeal is oatmeal ground to a powder, so it mixes well with water. It can calm inflamed skin for some people. But other folks can have reactions to it. To try it, use lukewarm water. If it’s too hot, it can irritate and dry your skin.

Add anti-itch cream. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone or calamine lotion may relieve itching.

Go baggy. Don’t wear tight clothes. They can irritate your rash. Play it loose and cool.

For severe symptoms, try a damp dressing. First find a soft cotton piece of clothing, like a long-sleeve T-shirt or long underwear. Soak it in water, wring it out, and then put it on. Wear something over it that's snug, but not too tight.

If you have a skin problem that doesn't go away on its own, always get it checked out by a doctor -- even if it gets a little better from a home treatment. They could be a sign of a serious medical condition.

How to treat diarrhea at home

Diarrhea can be highly uncomfortable, but most people can effectively treat it with rest and home remedies.
Diarrhea is a digestive problem that causes loose, watery bowel movements. It can be uncomfortable for a few hours or days, after which the symptoms should improve. In some instances, they last longer.
While diarrhea often goes away on its own, several home remedies can ease symptoms and speed up recovery.

Diarrhea causes a deficit of fluids, making it vital to rehydrate.
Hydrating the body is essential to recovering from diarrhea.
Diarrhea causes a deficit of fluids, including water. This causes the body to lose electrolytes such as sodium and chloride.
To support recovery, it is vital to restore fluids. Otherwise, a person may become dehydrated.
Dehydration can be dangerous in children and older adults, so it is crucial to encourage them to drink water if they are experiencing diarrhea.
Drinking water is the first step to rehydrating. A person can also to create an oral rehydration solution by mixing 1 liter of water with half a teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar.
Consuming sugar and salt with water helps the intestines to absorb fluids more efficiently. This solution more effectively rehydrates the body after a bout of diarrhea than water alone.
Other drinks can also be beneficial. For example, drinking sports drinks can help rehydrate the body and restore potassium and sodium. Fruit juices can also help restore potassium.
Avoid drinking anything that will further irritate the digestive tract, such as:
  • caffeinated drinks
  • alcohol
  • carbonated beverages
  • very hot drinks

A diet of small, frequent meals can be better than eating three larger meals a day when recovering from diarrhea. A good diet for someone with diarrhea may involve:
  • foods rich in pectin, such as fruit
  • foods high in potassium, such as potatoes and sweet potatoes
  • foods with electrolytes, such as miso soup and sports drinks
  • cooked, soft vegetables
  • adequate amounts of protein
Some people find that having a liquid diet for the first 24 hours of diarrhea helps settle the digestive system. This may include salty broths, bland soups, and drinks.
Adopting this diet for the first 24 hours may prevent the bowels from working too hard.
Another option for people with diarrhea is the BRAT diet. This consists of:
  • Bananas
  • Rice
  • Apple sauce
  • Toast
This diet combines bland foods that are low in fiber and high in starch, which may help produce more solid bowel movements. It also contains helpful nutrients, such as potassium and pectin.
It is essential to note that the BRAT diet is highly restrictive and does not provide balanced nutrition. People should only follow this diet until they are feeling better and not any longer than 2 days.
